Community members admire calendar art work while Sklyvia helps out at the CVNDC table

Art Walk

CVNDC hopped on board to help sponsor the Montpelier Alive! downtown
ArtWalk on Friday, December 9th from 4-8pm. We are pleased to be a member
of Montpelier Alive! and to participate in this community event while displaying our Prevention Calendar student artwork at the same time.
Invitations were sent to our 12 calendar artists and some were able to attend with their families to view the laminated illustrations of various prevention messages. Each artist received a prize of $10 in Capitol Cash, gift certificates to use at a number of downtown Montpelier businesses.
One of almost 30 venues, we were able to use the former Capitol Video space at 50 Main Street so that we had great visibility and easier access than our 3rd floor offices!
We had 70 visitors stop by to see our clothesline display of art, enjoy some cider and brownies, and savor the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies brought over by the Basement Teen Center. Coalition staff members Ann Gilbert and Amanda Colon were joined by our teen helper Sylvia who worked together to set up, talk to visitors, display prevention materials, offer free calendars, and huddle together to stay warm on this December night. Thank you to all who stopped by to see us. If you missed this one, you can catch us next time as we plan to collaborate with the teen Center and participate in the next ArtWalk in the spring.

Congratulations to our e checkup to go winners, Casey Willard and Erin Glock. They took the e checkup to go survey and won an iPad 2-WiFi and an iPod Touch! Both ladies were extremely happy and learned a lot about their own drinking behavior and got accurate information about the potential consequences of binge drinking including financial, legal, social and health as well as resources. Look for our next drawing coming soon.

vcfa new smoke free zone signs

E-mail Print PDF

Next time you are up at Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA) campus, you might notice the new signs posted on buildings and receptacles. This summer the college revised their Campus Smoking Policy and declared that no smoking is allowed within 25 feet of any building on the VCFA campus and while on campus, smoking is only allowed in "Smoking Permitted" areas. CVNDC helped the college design and purchase the signage for the new policy. Hats off to VCFA for recognizing the rights of those who choose to smoke but choosing to provide a smoke-free environment to the greatest extent possible.

prescription drug drop off day a success

E-mail Print PDF

Prescription drug abuse is the Nation's fastest-growing drug problem as measured by emergency department visits and mortality data. Often, prescription drugs are easily accessible and often kept in home medicine cabinets long after they are needed, making them vulnerable to diversion or misuse. One way to reduce the accessibility of prescription drugs is to properly dispose of them in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner. Washington County hosted a safe disposal drop October 29th and was second only to Chittenden County for the total #of lbs of drugs collected per county. A total of 131.8 lbs. of drugs were collected at all five sites, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Vermont State Police, Northfield Police Department, Barre Police Department and at Mad River Valley Ambulance.

Compliance Check Awards
CVNDC congratulated and recognized local businesses that successfully passed ALL 2009-2011 Alcohol and Tobacco compliance checks. Certificates were distributed to sites along with helium Congratulations balloons from Rubber Bubbles and Capitol Stationers, a CVNDC brochure, a one-page write up about the upcoming Healthy Retailers campaign, and a blue penny tray with the inscription "We check ID and are good at it!" CVNDC visited 5 stores/restaurants at a time and were pleasantly surprised by the reactions of the recipients. The Manager of Applebees was happy to have another certificate to post next to the one they earned 2 years ago; Management at Charlie O's said they work hard at checking IDs and it was nice to be recognized for their efforts; We were greeted with smiles at Kurrle Fuels, Yankee Wine and Spirits, McGillicuddy's, and others.
An ad is scheduled to run in the Times Argus on Sat, Aug 6 and in the current edition of the Cabot Chronicle. Email notifications and congratulations were sent out to Middlesex Monthly newspaper, the East Montpelier Sign Post, and the Montpelier Bridge.
See the ad below which lists this year's 28 businesses. Congratulations and thanks go out to all of them for checking IDs and not selling tobacco and alcohol to underage customers. This practice helps keep our youth safe and reduces substance abuse in our communities.
